Earth Science Education
College students often take geology to avoid chemistry, biology or physics, only to discover that geology is all three. The geosciences provide an unparalleled gateway to the scientific world, but that potential has yet to be realized.
North Carolina provides an example that is unfortunately too common. There is a high school graduation requirement for Earth and Environmental Science. But there is no End of Course (EOC) testing for the class, so teaching of geosciences goes to new teachers who may well have no experience with earth science topics at all. There are teachers who discovered they would be teaching earth sciences three weeks before the start of the school year. Sometimes earth science teachers have been required to use their class time to help students study for classes that have EOC tests.
Saxigenus is dedicated to all forms of earth science education, both formal and informal, for students and teachers of all varieties.
For example, here is a chapter from my book on mineral identification, designed for novices of all types.
